Dis-Inflection
I like surprises.
I'm very new to the world of cell phones. And I have to say, cell phones are sucking the surprise out of my life. I love the mystery of a ringing phone and the unknown caller waiting on the other end. Is it someone I know? Will they have good news? Will I be excited to talk to them? Or will it be a complete surprise?
Brace yourself. I feel a rant coming on...
Caller ID ruins the mystery and surprise of phone calling. It alters every emotion and involuntary response associated with answering the phone. Even the inflection with which you say the simple word "Hello?" has now eternally changed by caller ID. With caller ID, there's no questioning inflection in the word "hello." Instead, people now answer the phone with "What's up?," "Did you get my email?," "Oh my gosh I can't believe he said that," and other phrases typically reserved as post-greeting conversation. In my post-cell-phone-sellout state of existence, I miss that .05 second of mystery that exists every time you pick up a ringing phone. Doesn't every caller deserve the old "Hello?", filled to the brim with inflection of excitement and anticipation and surprise?
And I'm spent...

Kind of like knowing the sex of a baby before it's born...I've made myself feel ok about that one by realizing it's still a surprise - just early. So on your cell phone you just say "ooohhh hellooo" to yourself and get that little burst of excitement before you refer to the caller id.
